Parsippany Motorcyclist Gets Prison Time for DWI Conviction

Parsippany Motorcyclist Gets Prison Time for DWI Conviction

A Parsippany NJ man is headed to prison after pleading guilty to causing multiple DWI motorcycle accidents.

The suspect is a 48-year-old resident of Parsippany, but he will be residing in New Jersey State Prison for at least a few years. That’s because he was sentenced to almost three years behind bars in connection with a number of motorcycle crashes. According to Sussex County prosecutors, the suspect was intoxicated and driving without a valid license when he caused the motorcycle accidents.

The suspect’s license was initially suspended in April 2014 after he pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in Byram, New Jersey. Later that same year, in September 2014, the suspect crashed his motorcycle in Sparta, NJ. He was subsequently charged with another DWI offense and cited for driving while suspended. As a result, the suspect’s license suspension period was extended and he was barred from operating a car or a motorcycle on NJ roadways.

Despite the license suspension, the suspect continued to drive his motorcycle. In January 2016, he was involved in yet another motorcycle accident in Sparta. When Sparta cops found the suspect, he had crashed his bike and was heavily intoxicated. Once again, the suspect was charged with drunk driving and issued a traffic citation for driving while suspended.

The suspect ultimately managed to avoid a trial by reaching a plea deal with the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office. In exchange for the suspect pleading guilty to a second offense DWI, prosecutors agreed to recommend that he receive credit for time already served in jail.

The suspect recently made an appearance in Sussex County Superior Court, which is located in Newton NJ, so that the judge could approve the plea agreement. The judge signed off on the plea deal and sentenced the suspect to an additional 633 days behind bars. The judge also ordered that the suspect’s license be suspended for a period of 10 years and that he enroll in alcohol education classes at an Intoxicated Driver Resource Center (IDRC) after he has completed his prison sentence.

Drunk Driving Accidents in New Jersey

Although the motorcyclist somehow avoided serious injury during his DWI crashes, the reality is that many bikers involved in DWI accidents are not so fortunate. Motorcyclists are at increased risk of serious injury in the event of a drunk driving accident because they are not protected by the body of a car. So when a motorcycle skids off the roadway, or collides with a truck or car, it is often the biker who suffers the most severe bodily injuries. Moreover, drunk driving is one of the most common causes of fatal motorcycle accidents on NJ roads and highways.
