As the weather warms up, it becomes time to take out the iron horse and hop on for a ride. As a rider, you know there is no better feeling than taking your motorcycle out for a warm weather ride – just you and the open road.
As of late though, that road is not as open as you may like, especially in New Jersey. For as many roads as there are, there always seems to be a high number of motor vehicles on the road at any given time. This high volume of traffic is only one of many reasons why New Jersey saw an increase in motorcycle deaths this past year.
According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association report, there were 80 fatalities related to motorcycle accidents in New Jersey last year. This translates to a 15 percent increase since the year prior, which is in contrast to the national trend that saw an 8.6 percent decrease in 2017.
One of the handful of causes of these motorcycle deaths is distracted driving, which usually falls on those motorists driving with four wheels. Distracted driving is defined as driving while engaged in another activity that diverts attention away from driving. This includes talking or texting on a cell phone, adjusting the stereo, GPS or temperature controls, eating and drinking, or talking to passengers in your vehicle – really anything that keeps your attention away from practicing safe driving.
As it stands, it is already difficult to see motorcyclists on the road. Since they are small, motorcycles tend to fall in blind spots. Motorists that are driving distracted only increase their chances of causing a motorcycle accident.
An accident for a motorcyclist can end up much more debilitating than for a motorist in a vehicle. There is nothing separating you from the open road you crave, and injuries that stem from hitting that can be catastrophic or even fatal.
As a rider, you need to do all you can to practice safe riding and keep yourself protected. Wear a helmet and stay wary of motorists on the road.
No matter how safe you try to be, there can be no helping the actions of other, negligent drivers on the road. If you or a loved one has ended up injured in a motorcycle accident in New Jersey, an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer will come in handy.
