You may have seen signs along NJ highways over the past couple of weeks reminding you to “Watch Out for Motorcycles!” Those safety signs are in celebration of National Motorcycle Safety Awareness month. They are part of an initiative carried out each May by organizations throughout the region that are raising awareness about the unique dangers riders face on the roads.

The onus for motorcycle safety does not only fall on riders making sure they operate their motorcycles responsibly, it also falls on the shoulders of motorists. Bikers have the same rights to the road as anyone else and should be treated as such.

Here are some quick tips for operators of bikes, cars, trucks and other motor vehicles to follow to promote safety for bikers and all other motorists.

• Drive sober: This should go without saying, however, there are still thousands of people pulled over for driving while intoxicated. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the percentage of intoxicated motorcycle riders in fatal crashes is greater than the percentage of intoxicated drivers on the roads.
• Keep a safe distance: Motorcycles are more prone to sudden maneuvers and stops than cars, because of hazards like potholes and gravel, which are relatively harmless to cars. Motorists would be wise to keep a safe distance from bikers.
• Watch for hazardous weather: All motorists and riders should be wary of inclement weather like wet or icy roads, but motorcyclists are more at risk. This is because maneuverability becomes increasingly difficult for bikers.
• Watch your blind spots: Bikes sometimes appear farther away than they are, or are barely visible in side view mirrors. With the sun out and the weather getting better and better, motorists need to be extra aware of their blind spots.
• No distracted driving: Texting and driving, eating and driving, talking and driving or any type of distracted driving is a recipe for disaster. Bikers are making split second maneuvers so you need all of the reaction time possible.
