Buying Motorcycle Insurance?

Motorcycle insurance is absolutely necessary for any biker. Not only is it legally mandatory for bikers to have insurance before they hit the road, but having the proper type and amount of insurance can save you thousands on medical bills, bike repairs and more — should you get into an accident. You get what you pay for when it comes to insurance and I believe it’s critical to buy as much motorcycle insurance as you can possibly afford.

However, here are some ways to possibly reduce rates while not reducing coverage on quality motorcycle insurance:

  • Choose a bike that doesn’t cause insurance rate hikes. You might not like having to forgo that slick road hog, but insurance companies will charge an arm and a leg to insure bikers who drive motorcycles that are considered dangerous. Ask your insurance agent which bikes are most insurance-friendly.
  • Drive smart, not flashy. It is tempting to show off your biking skills when you get a new chopper, but it isn’t wise. Sure, cruising down the highway at 120 miles per hour may be thrilling, but it’s dangerous and will likely get you a ticket. Having loads of citations and accidents will make insurers believe you’re a risky driver. This, in turn, will cause your rates to skyrocket.
  • If you’re young, it’s good to have good grades in college or a history of higher education. Many insurance companies offer discounts for responsible behavior in other parts of life.
  • Bundling your insurance is smart. Get your insurance from the same company as your car insurance, and you will be able to reap the rewards by getting a discount on both. Insurance companies love people who bundle their insurance!
  • Don’t buy riders that you don’t need. Use your common sense when it comes to buying or not buying additional insurance. Some are necessary, others are a waste. For example, if you don’t have the seat or footrests for a second passenger, don’t buy a passenger rider. On the other hand, if you want to bring your wife or husband for a ride on your two-passenger bike, a passenger rider is absolutely mandatory.

While it may be tempting to go with the cheapest plan you can find, it’s not always the best decision for you. When it comes to insurance, as with most things in life, you get exactly what you pay for. If they are offering you a cheaper premium, don’t hesitate to wonder if that means you are getting less coverage.
