Have Enough Motorcycle Insurance?

New Jersey bike riders, like drivers of all motor vehicles registered in the Garden State, have to make sure they have insurance coverage that at least meets the minimum requirements set by NJ legislators.

Essentially, to be able to legally operate a motorcycle in NJ, lawmakers require you to provide “proof of financial responsibility.” This means that if you are in an accident, you will be able to pay for damage you caused. Most bike riders are able to do this with adequate motorcycle insurance coverage. As with all New Jersey laws, rest assured this state has some of the strictest rules when it comes to New Jersey’s motorcycle insurance requirements. They are different than car insurance guidelines and certainly different from other states. It is up to you — the rider — to make sure you are following laws regarding motorcycle insurance coverage.

In NJ, a motorcycle insurance policy must include:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury per person (per accident)
  • $30,000 for total bodily injury (when more than one person is hurt in an accident)
  • $5,000 for property damage

There are plenty of optional coverage plans, as well. Remember, these are the minimum requirements in New Jersey for motorcycle riders.
