Harley-Davidson Recalls Bikes with Faulty Ignition Switch

Harley-Davidson recently announced a small product recall of motorcycles that reportedly have the potential to cause dangerous motorcycle crashes.

The major bike company issued the recall of more than 8,000 Dyna Low Rider (FXDL 103) model motorcycles due to a defect identified in the motorcycle’s electrical system. It is believed that engine vibration can create problems for the ignition switch on the Harley-Davidson Dyna Low rider motorcycle. When the bike is used for an extended period of time and the engine vibration lasts a while, it can cause internal damage to the bike’s ignition switch. This, in turn, can lead to the engine stalling while the motorcyclist is on the roadway.

If the engine shuts down as the bike rider is traveling at a high rate of speed, the resulting motorcycle accident has the potential to be catastrophic. In the worst cases, a serious motorcycle crash can result in traumatic head injuries, spinal cord damage or even death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the ignition problem with the Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider bikes has resulted in at least 70 warranty claims from consumers. Thankfully, there have not been any reports of motorcycle accidents being caused by the defective auto part.

Thus far, a total of 8,060 units of the Dyna Low Rider model have been recalled. All of the affected bikes were manufactured over a two-year period, from January 2014 to April 2016. Harley-Davidson has not recalled any other motorcycles at this time.

The recall was issued voluntarily by Harley-Davidson, with the NHTSA merely providing assistance to the bike manufacturer. It is likely that the company took the drastic step of recalling the affected motorcycles in order to avoid costly product liability lawsuits in the event that any consumers suffered injuries in motorcycle accidents caused by the defective product.

Anyone who is currently using one of the affected bikes should contact their local Harley-Davidson dealer to arrange repairs. The company has already announced that its dealers will be installing an improved ignition switch on the defective motorcycles.
