Intoxicated Motorist Strikes and Injures 67-Year-Old Motorcyclist

Intoxicated Motorist Strikes and Injures 67-Year-Old Motorcyclist

In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a 39-year-old man pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and other charges surrounding his collision with a motorcycle on October 12, 2016. Timothy Babbitt severely injured a 67-year-old motorcyclist while he was intoxicated. Mr. Babbitt also pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment of another person, driving while under the influence, and reckless driving with respect to the subject incident.

Vicky Mazzocca, age 67, of Warminster, Pa., was riding in the southern direction on Route 611 in Doylestown when she was hit from behind by Mr. Babbitt’s Ford van. Ms. Mazzocca was ejected from the motorcycle and trapped beneath the bumper of the van. Mr. Babbitt resumed driving after the crash.

Ms. Mazzocca’s injuries included a concussion, several fractures and pulmonary edema. Mr.   Babbitt was subsequently discovered to have a blood-alcohol content of .269 percent over three times the legal limit in Pa. In addition, investigators located a large Gatorade bottle with alcohol inside of it in his van. They also found a receipt from a bar in Otisville for six drinks. These included three double-vodkas. The crash occurred at 3:00 p.m., less than half an hour after he exited the bar. According to authorities, sentencing was delayed pending the result of a pre-sentencing investigation.

Among the common causes of motorcycle accidents are head-on collisions, left-hand turns made by cars, motorcycle lane splitting, and collisions between motorists and stationary objects. Motorcyclists also confront far more perils from road hazards than do cars and other vehicles. Because of their smaller size and less stability, motorcycles are especially vulnerable to potholes, dead animals, and icy conditions.
