May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

As bikers prepare to enter peak riding season, they will be hitting the road during National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month seeks to promote education and awareness regarding proper motorcycle safety both when getting ready to ride and while out on the road. The event is especially welcome in New Jersey, where accidents are an unfortunately common occurrence.

To offer some additional education regarding proper motorcycle safety and protocol, here are a few facts from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to consider when hitting the road this season.

  • More than two-thirds of fatal accidents result from excessive speed
  • In 2013, 22 percent of motorcycle fatality victims did not have a motorcycle endorsement
  • About 40 percent of single-vehicle motorcycle fatalities occur during turns
  • In 2013, 31 percent of all fatal motorcycle crashes involved the presence of alcohol
  • Motorcycle crashes result in about 70 deaths and 2,000 injuries each year in New Jersey
  • Motorcycle riders are 26 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than those operating passenger vehicles and five times more likely to be injured

There are multiple ways you can simultaneously increase your safety and enjoyment during this riding season. Head out on a new journey to explore all the wonderful hidden gems New Jersey has to offer.

However, if you’re injured in an accident, you need to talk to an experienced motorcycle injury attorney who knows the law and can get you the justice you deserve. Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month reminds us that fun and safety aren’t mutually exclusive. In the end, however, you can’t protect yourself against every driver that doesn’t see you. The only thing you can do is make sure you’re covered in the event of an accident.
