NYPD Cracks Down on Dirt Bikers, Tries to Stem Rise in Motorcycle Accidents

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has announced a new strategy in the fight against illegal dirt bike activity on city streets. Part of this plan involves confiscating dirt bikes and then crushing them on television.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said that the police department will be destroying all dirt bikes and ATVs that are confiscated by law enforcement. Moreover, said Bratton, the destruction will occur on television in order to send a message to anyone else thinking about engaging in illegal motorcycle activity in New York. This is very similar to the strategy employed by Bratton when he was the Los Angeles Police Department’s chief of police more than a decade ago.

Commissioner Bratton recently held a press conference at the headquarters for the NYPD, where he said that the police department will be investing “significant resources” into finding dirt bikers who commit traffic offenses by joyriding on city streets. Then, noted Bratton, the police department will take the bikes “and just crush them.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said something similar, declaring that the televised destruction of the dirt bikes will occur in order to “make a point.”

The innovate approach to combatting dangerous driving, and stemming the rise in motorcycle accidents, is viewed by some NYC officials as necessary. To that end, the NYPD has already seized more than 300 motorcycles and dirt bikes that were reportedly driven, in violation of the law, on city streets. This represents a 100-percent increase over the number of confiscations made during the same period — the first three months — last year.
