Some Think Drunk Biking is Worse than Drunk Driving

It’s fairly common knowledge that drinking and drprinceiving is unacceptable behavior. However, you may not be aware, based on a report from trafficsafetymarketing.com, getting drunk and hopping on your motorcycle is even dumber than getting behind the wheel.

According to the study which examined motorcycle accidents in 2011, there was a greater percentage of bikers involved in fatal accidents who were intoxicated (27 percent), than car drivers (23 percent) or light truck operators (22 percent) who were involved in fatal accidents while intoxicated.

Even further, the study showed that 30 percent of all bikers in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher. It also showed that motorcyclists killed in accidents at night were 3.4 times more likely to have a BAC of .08 or higher, than those killed in daytime accidents. Lastly, the study showed that of 1,997 motorcyclists who died in single vehicle accidents, 42 percent of them had a BAC of .08 or higher. Of those who were killed on weekend nights, 67 percent had a BAC of .08 or higher.

With as many advertising campaigns, slogans, posters and deterrents against drinking and driving, it’s amazing that so many people still do it. While having proper equipment and a properly functioning bike are large factors in preventing fatal accidents, fewer things are as straight forward and as simple as remembering to drive and ride sober.
